DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Director of Clinical Education must have a passion for teaching and assisting their team in developing exceptional educational methodologies.
SAMPLES OF DUTIES:
The information listed below is meant to serve as samples of job duties and responsibilities for positions in this classification. This list is neither inclusive nor exclusive, but indicative of several types of duties performed:
- Secure new clinical sites and contractual agreements. Coordinate the tracking and verification of all program clinical affiliation contracts. Ensure contracts with clinical sites are current, accurate, viable and adequate in meeting program needs.
- Review student success rates by class and implement plan to reduce student withdrawals. Meet with students to encourage them to stay in the program. Maintain a 90% student success rate for all classes taught in the program.
- Monitor competency evaluations and clinical records with students. Conduct orientation for students to each clinical education site.
- Maintain student grades in accordance with established policies. Prepare final grades at the end of each semester to update student records and transcripts.
- Evaluate the performance of students regarding course objectives and makes necessary provisions to meet learning needs.
- Visit clinical sites to review and evaluate students’ clinical performance and progress. Coordinate with site instructors to ensure clinical education is effective.
- Coordinate the clinical education for the Physical Therapist Assistant program. Coordinate and revise the clinical education plan. Recommend changes to the Program Director.
- Coordinate with clinical staff to establish a regular site for students. Coordinate the scheduling of students within the department. Develop clinical objectives and evaluations.
- Assist the Program Director with student applicants for admission into the program.
- Prepare lesson plans and instruct students in physical therapy position techniques.
- Perform the duties of a Physical Therapist Assistant instructor.
- Instruct up to fifteen hours in the classroom per semester.
- Ensure compliance with all accreditation standards for the program.
Job Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapist program recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
- Earned professional degree as a physical therapist.
- Licensed/registered/certified or eligible for licensure/registration/certification in the state where employed.
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience as a physical therapist assistant or physical therapist.
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical teaching and/or clinical coordination experience.
- Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills.
- Able to work with students with special needs based on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal and practice issues affecting clinical education, students, and the profession of physical therapy.
- Able to meet the faculty requirements as stated in the Evaluative Criteria for the Accreditation of Physical Therapist Assistant Programs.
- Member of the American Physical Therapy Association.
- Able to initiate, administer, assess, and document clinical education programs.
- Able to work independently and coordinate work with colleagues and peers.
- Able to travel, as needed.
Preferred Requirements
- Prior teaching experience in a physical therapist assistant/physical therapist academic program or equivalent coursework.
- Earned bachelor degree or enrolled in or desire to pursue undergraduate studies.
- Knowledge of education, management, and adult learning theories and principles.
- Active in clinical practice, especially as applicable to clinical education.
- Active in professional activities at local, state, and/or national levels.
- APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor.
