Company

Nurix Therapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecule therapies designed to modulate cellular protein levels as a novel treatment approach for cancer and immune disorders. Leveraging Nurix’s extensive expertise in E3 ligases together with its proprietary DNA-encoded libraries (DEL), Nurix has built DELigase, an integrated discovery platform to identify and advance novel drug candidates targeting E3 ligases, a broad class of enzymes that can modulate proteins within the cell. Nurix’s drug discovery approach is to either harness or inhibit the natural function of E3 ligases within the ubiquitin proteasome system to selectively decrease or increase cellular protein levels.

Nurix’s wholly owned pipeline comprises targeted protein degraders of Bruton’s tyrosine kinase, a B-cell signaling protein, and inhibitors of Casitas B-lineage lymphoma proto-oncogene-B, an E3 ligase that regulates T cell activation. Nurix is headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Position

Nurix Therapeutics is seeking a skilled and motivated intern with expertise in protein biochemistry to join Nurix’s DEL and Protein Sciences group for a summer (June 14th –September 7th ) internship. Nurix is devoted to unlocking the therapeutic potential of the ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) in the areas of oncology and immuno-oncology, by utilizing the mechanistic and structural insights to guide drug discovery efforts. The successful candidate will contribute to Nurix’s protein expression and purification efforts for crystallography and DEL screening of novel E3 ligases as well as assay a novel ligase using their DEL platform. As such, the internship will be broken up into two modules. The first module will be focused on purification of novel ligases, while the second module will be focused on screening a ligase using our DEL platform. The internship will end with an oral presentation to the DEL & Protein Sciences group. The candidate should have a strong desire to learn new techniques. The ideal candidate will be self-driven, resourceful, organized, focused, and enjoy working in a dynamic team environment driven to deliver quality proteins and screen them using DELigase.

This internship will be mostly on-site at their company headquarters at 1700 Owens St with the potential for some remote work. Note: this is a fulltime position (40 hours per week). Both PhD candidates nearing graduation and postdocs are eligible. Hourly rate will be commensurate with previous experience.

Things you can expect to learn:

  • Immersive experience in drug discovery process, specifically in the field of targeted protein degradation
  • Large-scale protein purification of novel ligases
  • Nurix’s DEL platform/DEL screening
Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Hands-on expertise in protein purification obtained from bacterial, mammalian or insect expression systems for structural and/or functional applications.
  • Proficient in the operation of purification instrumentation (e.g. AKTA, ultracentrifugation) and purification techniques including but not limited to affinity chromatography, SEC, Ion-Exchange chromatography.
  • Experience in the development, optimization, or execution of biochemical or biophysical assays to interrogate protein interactions and enzymatic activity.
  • The successful candidate will be aligned to Nurix’s culture and values; they will be team oriented and highly collaborative with a hands-on approach.
  • The candidate should be enthusiastic, driven, and possess a keen attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, or related field.
  • Hands-on expertise on purification of E3 ligases and/or large protein complexes obtained from bacterial, mammalian or insect expression systems for structural and/or functional applications.
  • Knowledge of protein construct design tailored to elucidate structure-function relations and identification of structural and functional modules.
