Overview
ExcepGen is a venture-backed, early stage biotechnology company located in San Francisco. The company is focused on solving fundamental underlying problems in drug discovery and applying those solutions to create a new generation of therapeutics. We are seeking a conscientious, perceptive, and proactive Lab Operations Manager / Senior Manager to join our team.
The Lab Manager will play a critical role in ensuring that our R&D programs run smoothly by operating a well-functioning environment and maintaining key assets in the lab (including cell lines, equipment, supplies, etc.). The Lab Manager will also assist in the execution of experiments by conducting established protocols related to cell and molecular biology techniques and assays.
The best person for this role has a deep understanding of the inner workings of a lab and uses this knowledge to foresee potential issues and proactively improve processes. This role empowers the whole R&D team to be more effective and will enable the lab to scale as the company grows.
Responsibilities
- Maintain the lab environment to make it an effective place to conduct research
- Manage and track lab inventory
- Conduct lab purchasing activities including procurement, receiving, and stocking of inventory such as consumables, chemicals, and lab equipment
- Keep an active and updated inventory of laboratory supply; proactively reassessing upcoming needs versus current stocks and upcoming orders
- Work with the R&D team to understand their processes and requirements; maintain an organized lab that enables best workflow
- Maintain multiple cell lines
- Assist scientists in technical work as needed, in areas such as cell culture, cloning, usage of instruments/equipment related to project work, and various assays
- Follow established protocols to support experiments, taking direction from Project Leads
- Make/maintain common media and buffers, other commonly used reagents, etc.
- Serve as primary contact for lab vendors, including supplies, chemicals, gases, equipment maintenance and service visits
- Oversee and maintain laboratory policies and Environmental Health and Safety requirements
Education & Experience:
- BA/BS degree in biological sciences or a related area
- 2+ years of work experience managing a lab without daily oversight (academic or industry research lab)
- Some experience conducting wet lab experiments (e.g., familiarity with fundamental assays and use of equipment like plate readers, PCR machines, and microscopes)
- Exceptional organizational and record keeping skills
- Experience ordering, managing, and stocking supplies, including interfacing with vendors
- Ability to effectively use and maintain laboratory instruments such as centrifuges, CO2 incubators, shaker-incubators, thermocyclers and related instruments
- Sterile technique and mammalian cell culture skills

Nice to Have:
- Practical knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques, cloning, mutagenesis, protein expression and purification
- Knowledge/prior use of assays such as of SDS-PAGE, western blotting, ELISA
- Proven track record of championing processes that improve efficiency in the lab
