Merck & Co., Inc. are seeking an innovative synthetic chemist or bioconjugation chemist to join the company's Exploratory Science Center (MESC) in Cambridge, MA.
The successful candidate will become part of a lab-based, creative and fast-paced team that will discover novel biology and invent impactful technologies targeting oncology, inflammation, cardiovascular, metabolism and neuroscience.

Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:
- Develop and optimize bio-conjugation technologies, synthesize payloads and linkers for conjugation
- Help identify and validate new targets, which may include collaborative engagement with the external scientific community and leadership of early drug discovery projects
- Execute synthetic chemistry across a wide range of chemical modalities
- Act as a leader from the bench, to drive chemistry strategy for various programs
- Leverage advances in chemical synthesis and delivery technologies of complex large molecules to impact multiple ESC programs
- Provide scientific mentoring and technical training of team members as appropriate
- Ensure all laboratory safety protocols are followed
Required Experience:
- Bio-conjugation of payload to antibody or protein scaffolds
- Independent synthetic route design and expertise in the multi-step synthesis
- Strong background in organic synthesis with focus on peptides, carbohydrates or small molecules
- Experience in synthesis of oligonucleotide will be a plus
- Strong publication record and effective written and oral communication skills
Preferred Experience:
- Hands-on experience in bio-analytical techniques such as CE-SDS, Western Blot, SEC, HPLC, DLS, MS-ToF etc.)
- Hands-on experience in molecular cloning, cell culture, protein expression and purification, characterization will be a plus
Education:
- PhD or M.S. in synthetic organic chemistry, chemical biology, macromolecular chemistry or related discipline
- Minimum of 5 + years of industrial experience after M.S. or 0 to 3 years after PhD
