The University of San Francisco is seeking part time faculty to teach laboratories in the spring semester. All classes will be taught in person. For details on how USF is dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic see USF Together.

Laboratory instructor positions (compensation per lab section = $4,202, no benefits): 

• BIOL105L General Biology I Lab (science majors)

Lab sections: Wednesday 5:00 pm-7:50 pm, Thursday 11:00 am-1:50 pm 

Instructor meeting: Friday 11:30 am-1:00 pm (first meeting Jan 13 on Zoom, all other meetings in person)

This course is the second semester of the yearlong freshman General Biology series and covers a variety of basic concepts in biology relating to organismal systems such as reproduction, circulation, digestion, etc., along with a survey of kingdoms/domains of life. Students will be in multiple lecture sections taught by full time faculty, students have three hours of lecture and one lab session each week.

The textbook, lab manual, topics to be covered and lab exercises for the course are set. During the weekly mandatory instructor meeting, the next week's activities will be discussed and supporting teaching materials will be provided. In addition to teaching the lab, instructors are responsible for making and grading weekly quizzes, grading lab reports, and providing minimal assistance with preparing lab materials.

• BIOL135 Microbiology Lab (Nursing and Kinesiology majors)

Lab sections: Tuesday 11:00 am-1:50 pm, Tuesday 2:00 pm-4:50 pm, Wednesday 11:00 am-1:50 pm, Wednesday 2:00 pm-4:50 pm, Thursday 11:00 am-1:50 pm

Instructor meeting: Friday 10:30 am-11:30 am

This course is taught for freshman Nursing students. It covers the basic concepts of microbiology. Lectures are taught by full-time faculty, students have three lectures and one lab session each week.

The textbook, lab manual, topics to be covered and lab exercises for the course are set. During the weekly mandatory instructor meeting, the next week's activities will be discussed and supporting teaching materials will be provided. In addition to teaching the lab, instructors are responsible for making and grading weekly quizzes, grading lab reports, and providing minimal assistance with preparing lab materials.

• BIOL311 Genetics Lab (Biology majors)

Lab sections: Monday 1:00 pm-3:50 pm

Instructor meeting: Thursday 9:00 am-10:30 am

The Genetics laboratory accompanies the Genetics lecture course that is required for all Biology majors after they have completed General Biology (1 year) and Cell Physiology (1 semester). The lab covers topics in Mendelian, molecular, and population genetics, using techniques such as Drosophila crosses, bacterial conjugation, RFLP analysis and karyotyping. Lecture is taught by full time faculty and students have one lab session each week. Lab sections will have 14-18 students each.

General Information

Dates: Spring classes start January 23 and end May 11. There are no classes on Presidents Day (Feb 20), during Spring Break (Mar 13-17) and Easter Holiday (April 7, starting at 4 pm April 6) (USF academic calendar).  

International scholars: International students/postdocs are advised to contact the UCSF International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) to determine eligibility for a paid part-time teaching position outside of UCSF under your particular visa. USF cannot assist with visa issues. International scholars on a J-1 visa can teach at USF, but must submit a letter of support from their principal investigator with their application to USF, and obtain official permission through ISSO if an offer of hire is made.  

Domestic and international scholars: It is your responsibility to verify that external employment is allowed for your particular situation (e.g., some fellowships do not allow outside employment).

Job Requirements: 

For lab instructors, PhDs and graduate students will be considered, teaching experience is not required.
