The Kim Lab at UCSF is seeking a motivated scholar to conduct cross-disciplinary research that employs advanced optical imaging to study developmental and vascular diseases of the visual system. This work will be co-mentored by Professor Douglas Gould, Vice Chair of Research within the UCSF Department of Ophthalmology. The scholar will participate in a robust training program preparing him/her to become an independent investigator.  He/she will present data at scientific meetings, prepare manuscripts, apply for research funding, and mentor junior members of the lab.

Professor Tyson Kim is a clinician-scientist with a background in biological and optical engineering, vascular development, and ophthalmology. He is passionate about innovation and his research centers on studying cellular-level dynamics and physiology in intact tissues with an emphasis on developmental and vascular diseases of the eye. The complex interaction of tissues in these diseases can be challenging or impossible to understand through traditional assays such as cell or organotypic tissue culture. The Kim lab therefore develops advanced imaging and analytical methods, and merges these with genetic tools to unravel the cellular and physiological mechanisms driving disease longitudinally over time in intact living organisms. These methods are broadly powerful, and the lab also investigates translational applications for medical diagnostics
