Responsibilities

  • Supervises Occupational Health Nurses by assigning work, approving work schedules, training staff (i.e., medical record reviews, OSHA respirator questionnaire reviews, OSHA medical surveillance requirements, employee return to work note reviews, chronic condition verifications,  connecting absence reviews, and updates in DOT and OSHA regulations).
  • Evaluates work performance and supports furthering each staff member’s career development.
  •  Provides oversight of:  autoclaving of instruments; re-supplying of examination rooms, procedure rooms and pharmaceuticals; review of calibration of instruments, including glucose monitoring instruments, audiology booth, and spirometer.
  • Responds to Personnel Services Office (PSO) and management inquiries regarding employees' medical evaluations, such as post offer medical evaluations; medical alert evaluations, drug recognition evaluations, injury evaluations, disability evaluations, and DOT evaluations.
  • Assists Medical Director in responding to LADWP management questions regarding OSHA medical surveillance findings, medical-related policies and OHS protocols, providing procedural directions, and assisting PCU with the scheduling of appropriate medical evaluations.
  • Assists the Medical Director and OHS physicians in the reporting of OHS test results and final assessments.
  • Responsible for assigning and reporting of proficiency testing on a quarterly basis.
  • Ensures all medical equipment is functioning accurately, and yearly certification is performed on specified equipment.
  • As Custodian of Medical Records for OHS, responds to subpoenas, employees' requests for medical records, and litigation support.
  • Per request of the Medical Director, represents OHS in assigned management meetings.
  • Orders and maintains medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, including Disaster Medical supplies (both LADWP and County supplies).
  • Assists physicians in evaluation and treating employees for occupational injuries and illnesses by obtaining a brief history of patient's condition, checking vital signs (such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature), and minor surgical procedures, such as suturing wounds, apply/change dressings, administers immunization/ vaccination injections.
  • Processes post offer, Department of Transportation (DOT), and Medical Surveillance physical examinations by performing various tests such as: urine drug screen, vision test, pulmonary function test, audiograms, EKG, breath alcohol test, DOT urine collection, and blood draws (phlebotomy).
  • Responds to emergency calls and medical alerts in the John Ferraro Building.
Job Requirements: 

Requirements

  • A valid Registered Nurse License issued by the California Board of Nursing Education and Nurse Registration; and
  • Two (2) years of full-time paid experience as an Occupational Health Nurse or in a class which is at least at that level in professional nursing; and
  • Possession of a current, valid American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR card; and
  • Valid California driver’s license; and
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • A Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) certified by the American Board of Occupational Health Nurses is desired.
