We are seeking an experienced Scientist/Senior Scientist, Bioinformatics to fill an exciting role in our exceptional, highly collaborative and matrixed Research department. The ideal candidate will have solid training in bioinformatics or related discipline and be delivery oriented with a focus on real world impact. The candidate will also be a quick learner, extremely flexible and able to adapt to changing needs and new scientific advancements. This person will collaborate across all facets of our pipeline, functional groups across multiple disciplines and be key in providing support to Ultragenyx Research, Ultragenyx Gene Therapy and Molecular Diagnostics.

Work Model Flex: can complete work from home during the pandemic; once return to the office 2-3 days in office to be expected and established with manager

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide bioinformatics support to Ultragenyx Gene Therapy, the Ultragenyx Research group and Biomarker strategy.
  • Design and implement in silico AAV vector and capsid optimization pipelines in collaboration with the Ultragenyx Gene Therapy vector engineering team.
  • Independently carry out bioinformatics analyses and deliver results to project teams.
  • Contribute to patient identification in the field of rare genetic diseases through aiding diagnostic sequencing programs, genotype/phenotype data capture and data analysis.
  • Support the development and maintenance of a database to store genotype/phenotype information and analyze genotype-phenotype associations.
  • Interpret variants through use of genomic databases and bioinformatics tools.
  • Interact with Ultragenyx Gene Therapy, Translational Sciences, Molecular Diagnostics, Medical Affairs, Commercial and Patient Diagnosis Teams and provide support to ensure best use of all relevant data impacting project decisions.

Job Requirements: 

Requirements

  • Degree in Bioinformatics or related scientific discipline.
  • PhD and 5+ years’ related experience (may include post-doctoral experience) or MS with 12+ years’ related experience or BA/BS 15+ with years’ related experience
  • Experience with bioinformatics support in Gene Therapy platforms preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.
  • Reputation as emerging leader in field with sustained performance and accomplishments, which may include publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or patents (issued or applications).
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and data analysis skills based on body of work and record of accomplishments.
  • Depth in familiarity of public databases such as ClinVar, GEO, GTEx, GenBank and gnomAD.
  • Understanding of NGS t echnologies.
  • Familiarity with analysis of RNA-Seq, Single cell sequencing, WGS and Exome sequencing data.
  • Experience and fluency with standard software tools for high-throughput sequencing data processing.
  • Solid understanding of statistical genetics and ability to perform analysis in R or equivalent software.
  • Ability to independently design and perform diverse bioinformatics tasks.
  • Programming and scripting abilities in languages, such as R, Perl, Python.
  • Familiarity with machine learning and implementations in analyzing biological data.
  • Familiar with Linux/Unix systems.
  • A collaborative and team player with excellent communication and presentation skills and ability to thrive in a dynamic environment is essential.
