NCIRE has a full-time opening for a Science Project Manager / Science Writer.

We are looking for a sharp science writer and analyst with great managerial skills. In your role as Scientific Research Analyst, you will help to coordinate large international scientific initiatives and collaborations, which would also include preparing research manuscripts and grants for a group multidisciplinary UCSF Scientific Investigators with a focus on Alzheimer’s Disease and Aging. You will work in a dynamic environment amongst a large group of enthusiastic and high-performing scientists and support their work. The candidate is expected to provide input, be involved with, although not carry out the actual research. This person will be the right hand for a prolific lead scientist who submits and receives a large volume of grants and industry contracts. The ideal candidate should be independent, a self-starter with a can-do attitude and someone who likes to suggest new approaches when needed. Hard worker willing to put in long hours in a fun and supportive environment, some travel.

Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Science:
    • Science writing, both for grant applications, progress reports and support of scientific publications
    • Coordinating large international collaborative projects and direct science to the appropriate scientists/researchers involved
    • Overseeing and managing the scientific section of progress reports
    • Attending regular lab and scientific collaboration meetings to stay on top of all research activities that are going on in the lab
    • Representing PI in certain scientific contexts
  • Scientific Project Management:
    • Managing large scale grant applications, including gathering of documents and various components for these
    • Keeping track of which scientists/researchers work on which grants and projects (serve as liaison with lab manager / lead scientists)
    • Evaluating personnel needs and filling expertise gaps in the lab by managing hiring of new members
    • Researching and identifying grant opportunities, and working with the appropriate scientists to submit applications
    • Assisting PI in creating budgets and other grant components, such as budget justifications and biosketches
    • Seeking out and identifying philanthropic and private sector grants, donations or gifts as well as fellowships
    • Managing grants document library for the PI and research team
    • Liaising with Post Awards Analyst
  • All candidates will be asked to:
    • Demonstrate the ability to write clearly and accurately to deadline.
    • Demonstrate the ability to multitask and quickly prioritize work assignments.
    • Demonstrate the ability to research, write and manipulate data through knowledgeable use of online technologies, including Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint as well as equivalent software on Apple products.
    • Demonstrate the ability to analyze, categorize and summarize key aspects of clinical research data and bioscience information.
    • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with information sources and colleagues in a professional and affable manne
    • The work environment is casual; however, professional behavior, rapt attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines are absolute requirements. Candidate must be able to work with a prolific, high-energy scientist with complex schedule needs. Job Requirements: 
  • REQUIREMENTS
    • The position requires at least a PhD in Life Sciences. Additional experience in an academic setting is highly preferred.
    • Writing experience is required, publications and grant applications to prove successful writing are a plus.
    • Relevant work experience in scientific management is a plus.
