Research Scholar
This position will be located at our SF VA Medical Center.
Position Definition:
The incumbent will be training and conducting research experiments evaluating the role of the IGF-I signaling pathway and skeletal unloading in bone metabolism.
Essential Functions:
- Conduct phosphorylation assay of IGF-I signal pathways using immunoprecipitation and western blotting system
- Conduct experiments using skeletal unloading models (rats or mice)
- Conduct experiments using primary cell culture of bone marrow and periosteal osteoprogenitors
- Perform histomorphometry and immunohistochemistry of bone sections
- Perform qPCR on RNA preparations from bone and bone cultures
- Prepare various chemicals for experimental use
- Perform statistical analysis of experimental results and findings
- Perform supply ordering/maintenance and equipment maintenance; perform additional general laboratory management duties as assigned
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
- Completion of a doctoral program in biomedical sciences
- Prior experience in a laboratory environment and basic knowledge of procedures used in biochemistry/molecular biology research is highly desirable
- Prior experience and knowledge of bone biology and evaluation of bone is highly desirable
- Experience in working with small animals, especially mice
- Strong oral/written communication and organizational skills
- Ability to accurately follow experimental protocols
- Ability to manage multiple projects, tasks and priorities to achieve desired goal
