Research Scholar

This position will be located at our SF VA Medical Center.

Position Definition:

The incumbent will be training and conducting research experiments evaluating the role of the IGF-I signaling pathway and skeletal unloading in bone metabolism.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct phosphorylation assay of IGF-I signal pathways using immunoprecipitation and western blotting system
  • Conduct experiments using skeletal unloading models (rats or mice)
  • Conduct experiments using primary cell culture of bone marrow and periosteal osteoprogenitors
  • Perform histomorphometry and immunohistochemistry of bone sections
  • Perform qPCR on RNA preparations from bone and bone cultures
  • Prepare various chemicals for experimental use
  • Perform statistical analysis of experimental results and findings
  • Perform supply ordering/maintenance and equipment maintenance; perform additional general laboratory management duties as assigned
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Job Requirements: 

Job Requirements:

  • Completion of a doctoral program in biomedical sciences
  • Prior experience in a laboratory environment and basic knowledge of procedures used in biochemistry/molecular biology research is highly desirable
  • Prior experience and knowledge of bone biology and evaluation of bone is highly desirable
  • Experience in working with small animals, especially mice
  • Strong oral/written communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to accurately follow experimental protocols
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, tasks and priorities to achieve desired goal
