Overview

A post-doctoral position is available immediately to join a research group at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, with collaborators in several laboratories around the world, to analyze the microbiome in human cancer.

We have previously identified an association of specific bacteria, especially Fusobacterium nucleatum, with human cancers; have shown that Fusobacterium can potentiate colon cancer in mouse models; and have found that Fusobacterium and the associated microbiome persist in metastatic human colon cancers, where they remain in close proximity with the cancer cells themselves.

Responsibilities Our goal is to understand the interaction of the colon cancer microbiome with the host—with cancer cells, with immune cells, and with the normal epithelium. Our approach, at least initially, will be a combination of single cell transcriptomics with spatial transcriptomics. We may also investigate other approaches including microbial culture or co-culture, in situ protein-based analyses, or high-resolution microscopy.

The post-doctoral fellow will work to advance this project based on approaches such as described above. Support for this research will be provided from the Cancer Research UK Grand Challenge on the cancer microbiome

  • A record of scientific accomplishment as shown by peer-reviewed publication.
  • A collaborative, curious, creative, proactive and organized temperament.
  • A commitment to advancing fundamental knowledge of the cancer microbiome and to translating that knowledge to the development of novel therapeutic approaches.
