The Palop laboratory at the Gladstone Institutes is seeking a Research Associate to provide support for projects aimed at understanding cellular, synaptic and network dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and other neurological disorders. The project is supported by a NIH-SBRI grant aimed at developing novel therapeutics to treat cognitive and network dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Dravet syndrome (DS). This position will focus on preclinical evaluation in mouse models of AD and DS and will require: breeding and maintaining mouse colonies of AD and DS mouse models, dosing (injecting) cohorts of mice for treatment administration, performing behavioral and EEG experiments to assess treatment efficacy of the small molecules, and postmortem immunostaining experiments. The successful candidate will work a as part of a team but may also carry out independent experiments, including data analyses and preparation of figures. Training will be provided and prior experience in behavioral experiments, colony management, IHC, and electrophysiology is preferred but not required. This position offers the opportunity to integrate cutting edge behavioral paradigms and in vivo electrophysiology analysis with machine learning while developing novel therapeutics for Alzheimer’s disease and Epilepsy.

Desired experience:

  • Experience working with rodents, handling, dosing (injections) and genotyping.
  • Experience maintaining mouse colonies, perfusions, and preparing brain tissue for immunohistochemistry.
  • Experience with analytical and visualization software including ImageJ, Excel, Prism, Python, MATLAB, and/or SPSS.
  • Experience performing behavioral experiments in rodents.
  • Experience with multi-electrode array (MEA) recordings from brain slices, and/or electrophysiology.
  • Organized, communicative, detail-oriented, and self-motivated to perform projects independently.
  • Eager to learn, passionate about neuroscience, and ready to make meaningful contributions to science.

Job Requirements: 

Applicants must hold an Associate's degree and 2+ years relevant experience or a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Neuroscience or related field with 1–2 years of relevant experience working with rodents.
