The Palop Lab at the Gladstone Institutes and UCSF is seeking a Research Associate to assist in studies focusing on cognitive and network dysfunction in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. The successful candidate will use machine learning approaches to analyze mouse behavioral videos and simultaneously-collected neurophysiological signals (e.g. EEG/EMG, LFP, single/multi-unit recordings) as well as supporting postdoctoral scholars and Ph.D. students with data analysis and interpretation. Key responsibilities include developing and optimizing behavioral tests (e.g., open field, social behaviors, novel object recognition) for machine learning approaches, including motion tracking for mouse pose estimation, performing behavioral segmentation and sequencing, and developing scripts for data analyses and statistics. Depending on interests, skills, and career plans, the successful candidate may also carry out independent projects and receive training to perform specialized analytical techniques such as brain wave analysis, neuronal spike sorting, computation on the UCSF Wynton supercomputing cluster, and running mouse behavioral assays. This position also offers the opportunity to implement machine learning approaches for behavioral phenotyping with the Gladstone Behavioral Core and Gladstone Bioinformatics Core.

Desired experience

  • Experience with analytical and computational approaches, including MATLAB, Python, and/or machine learning. Experience with DeepLabCut is welcomed but not required.
  • Experience writing custom scripts for data analysis and visualization.
  • Experience with statistical software including Excel, Prism, and/or SPSS.
  • Experience with in vivo or in vitro neurophysiology, including EEG/LFP recordings.
  • Experience with mouse work, including behavioral testing and Noldus software.
  • Goal-oriented team player able to contribute to multiple projects independently or under supervision.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated.
  • Eager to learn, passionate about neuroscience, and ready to make meaningful contributions to science.

At Gladstone and in the Palop Laboratory, we know it takes a diverse group of empowered individuals to advance science and effectively overcome disease. We are committed to creating a diverse community and cultivating a culture where every individual is respected and can succeed. We encourage applications from members of groups historically underrepresented in the sciences.
