The Garrison lab at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging is seeking a flexible and highly motivated individual to serve as a Research and Administrative Lab Manager. Responsibilities include research and administrative support for both faculty and lab members. The ideal candidate is a scientist who wants to continue working at the bench doing experiments and expand their skills in the managerial/administrative side of research. This person will work closely with and provide daily support at every level to assist the PI in running the lab, as well as conduct their own independent research projects. We are looking for someone with a strong background in neuroscience and/or molecular biology techniques who has served in a managerial role and is familiar with regulatory, training, and logistics tasks; and has some hands-on experience with C. elegans and/or laboratory rodents. This individual must be proficient with writing scientific documents, processing and proofreading technical reports, grant proposals, manuscripts, and/or other materials. Knowledge of GLPs and institutional regulatory guidelines is also desirable. The Research and Administrative Lab Manager must be able to work independently as well as nurture lab cohesiveness and team development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee/perform laboratory research/instruction, inventory planning and purchasing.
  • Author and review scientific manuscripts.
  • Mentor and supervise staff, overseeing the quality and accuracy of their work.
  • Organize and oversee the daily operation of the administrative office and research lab.
  • Proofread/format/submit grant applications, publications, and correspondence on time. Help prepare slides/graphics/software files for presentations.
  • Liaise between the lab, internal departments and external collaborators at other research institutes, universities and government funding offices.
  • Maintain a clean, safe laboratory and hold people accountable for results.
  • Reconcile monthly accounts and prepare projections on sponsored (grants) accounts.
  • Organize and audit lab files and records; assist in preparing capital and operating budgets.
  • Track and project spending, advise of problems and describe possible solutions.
  • Prepare and process check requests, reimbursements, and purchase orders; balance visa statements; process timesheets; order office supplies.
  • Recommend adaptations and modifications to procedures and equipment in the teaching laboratory. Provide advanced important technical expertise for data review and interpretation.
  • Develop and implement appropriate administrative policies and procedures for the laboratory. (Animal protocols, biohazard protocols, etc.).
  • Define, develop and conduct experiments that comply with applicable regulations and SOPs. Author, review, and approve SOPs, analytical methods, protocols, and reports.
  • Schedule, plan and coordinate meetings, lectures, and events.
  • Coordinate with HR and IT on processing new hires. Screen candidates. Orient, train, and prepare new staff in the operation of computers, software and research equipment.
  • Provide advice, obtain quotes, and develop maintenance, calibration, and training protocols for specialized laboratory major and small equipment/instruments.
Job Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS or PhD in Biology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Chemistry or related field
  • 5+ years’ experience within an academic research setting
  • In-depth knowledge of Aging Biology, including both theory and practice highly desirable
  • Demonstrated supervisory and interpersonal skills
  • Grants Administration in lab setting experience highly desirable
  • Advanced Excel and Word (both Mac and PC)
  • Works effectively in a fast-pace environment and can manage multiple priorities and project timelines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as demonstrated by symposia presentations and research publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Knowledge of GLPs, regulatory guidelines (such as BUA, SCRO, and IACUC, protocols) and additional analytical techniques a plus
  • Ability to serve as consultant or a member of IACUC, EH&S, and/or BUA committees
  • Knowledge and experience to support development and pioneering programs in gene editing research, neurobiology, genetics and genomics preferred
