Northern California Institute for Research and Education (NCIRE) is the leading nonprofit research institute in the United States devoted to advancing Veterans health research. NCIRE is part of one of the world’s most dedicated and successful Veterans care communities, pioneering new treatments and understandings of military medicine and care. Along with our partners at the San Francisco VA Health Care System and the University of California, San Francisco, we are working to discover and develop effective, safe, and practical treatments for military injuries and diseases affecting Veterans. Through new technologies, novel scientific insights, and international clinical collaborations, we strive to set a new standard of health care research for Veterans and military personnel.
The Cardiac Biomechanics Lab at San Francisco VA Medical Center and UCSF is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Fellow to join our team. The successful candidate will work on an experimental study of aortic tissue material properties, with a focus on conducting biaxial stretching experiments to understand the mechanical behavior of the aortic wall under various physiological and pathological conditions.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct biaxial stretching experiments to investigate the mechanical properties of aortic tissue samples.
- Develop and implement experimental protocols to characterize the mechanical behavior of aortic tissue samples under different loading conditions.
- Analyze and interpret experimental results to gain insights into the mechanical behavior of the aortic wall.
- Collaborate with computational modelers and clinicians to integrate experimental data with computational models and clinical observations.
- Write manuscripts for publication in high-impact journals and present research findings at scientific conferences.
Qualifications:
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong background in experimental mechanics and materials testing, particularly biaxial stretching experiments.
- Familiarity with biomechanics and cardiovascular physiology.
- Experience with tissue mechanics testing equipment such as biaxial testing machines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
The Cardiac Biomechanics Lab is a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary research group with a strong focus on integrated clinical and biomechanical research, where expertise from radiology, cardiology, cardiac surgery and bioengineering are combined together to improve outcome for patients with cardiovascular disease. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of scientists and clinicians, and to collaborate with other research groups at UCSF and the San Francisco VA Medical Center.
