  • Obstetric Team Responsibilities
    • OB RN Intake visits: taking a thorough patient medical and surgical history, update EHR with medications, problem list, schedule initial OB visits with CNM or MD
    • Coordinate routine and complex patient appointment scheduling for the Obstetrician physicians
    • Coordinate referrals to non-OB physicians for high risk obstetric patients
    • Triage OB visits: rule out preterm labor, severe nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, urgent mental health or social needs. Make patient assessments and coordinate follow up care.
    • Cover the OB RN “Desk”: field phone calls from OB patients, answer patient questions in regards to test results, common pregnancy complaints, medication questions
    • Coordinate with outside OB offices: UCSF PDC Ultrasound center, MHMC Labor and Delivery, Antenatal testing, genetic testing, NIPT/carrier testing
    • Discuss normal results for genetic testing, carrier testing, NIPT, ultrasounds
    • Check the OB MDs PAQs for lab and imaging results, ER follow ups
    • Manage the “OB Follow up Log:” ectopic pregnancy, pregnancy of unknown location, possible miscarriage, and coordinate any non-obstetric follow up care postpartum.
  • Gynecology Team Responsibilities
    • Perform patient phone calls to discuss complex results with direction from GYN providers: endometrial biopsy, vulvar biopsy, colposcopy
    • Communicate complex patient plans from physician to team, patients, and within the EHR: follow up s/p colposcopy, LEEP, endometrial hyperplasia
    • Patient preparation and education prior to office procedures: endometrial biopsy, colposcopy, LEEP, vulvar biopsy
    • Complex follow up calls after treatment initiated as directed by GYN provider: Abnormal uterine bleeding, fertility treatment w/ letrozole
    • Work with GYN surgery coordinator to help prepare patients for surgery: Pre-op instructions, pre-op medications, chlorhexidine prep, post-op instructions
    • Post-op day two phone call: assess for post-op complications and medication compliance, answer post-op questions, alert surgeon if any concerns
    • Coordinate care of urgent gynecology patients identified by PCPs: assess along with assistance from GYN MD whether ER visit necessary, coordinate urgent appointments or imaging
    • Manage the “GYN high risk list” – patients with gynecologic cancer or potential cancer, coordinate their follow up, imaging, referrals and long term follow up to prevent loss to follow up
    • Check the GYN MD’s PAQs
    • Relay to patients normal and abnormal Colposcopy Results (up to CIN 3) and follow up plan as determined by colposcopists
    • Coordination for the insurance approval, administration, and follow up of Lupron injections  for fibroids or heavy bleeding
    • Providing patient education of infertility work-up, menstrual calendar, timed intercourse, and treatment including oral ovulation induction medication regimen
    • Follow up fertility labs
    • Serve as MCC RN point person to other RNs and providers regarding cervical cancer screening questions and management of abnormal results

Procedural Skills:

  • Basic wound care: evaluation and treatment of minor post-op infections, wounds from laparoscopy, gynecology and OB patient. Visits will be  joint RN/MD visits
  • Insertion and removal of straight or indwelling urinary catheters
  • Suture removal
  • Phlebotomy skills
  • Assisting in LEEP procedures if MA not available or extra assistance needed
  • Assisting in hysteroscopy or Manual Vacuum aspiration procedures if MA not available or extra assistance needed
  • Medication administration of injectable and oral medications for treatment of STIs, pelvic infections, pain management prior to office procedures
  • Fetal heart rate auscultation and fundal height measurement
  • Patient instruction on using a home blood pressure cuff, home glucose monitor

Administrative Responsibilities:

  • Attend and participate in bi-monthly Reproductive and Sexual Health Meetings , assist in disseminating any new information to other MCC RNs
  • Attend and participate in OB High risk monthly meetings, help coordinate care as directed by OB team
  • Train and acclimate new OB GYN MAs
  • Provide annual training sessions in regards to cervical cancer screening for MCC RNs  to ensure follow up is uniform across the organization.
    • RN education on how to talk about HPV/ abnormal paps to patients
    • proper GYN chart updates within EHR (Care Guidelines)
Job Requirements: 
  • Associate or BS Nursing degree required. 
  • Active California RN License in good standing.
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication ability.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish medical Spanish highly desired.
  • Must be able to work independently and within a team environment. 
  • Must be sensitive to ethnic and cultural differences and their relevance to health care.
  • Willingness and ability to follow clinic policies, objectives and mission established by regulations, grants, management or the Board of Directors.
  • A valid and unrestricted license issued by the Nursing Board of California
  • A current BLS certification
