Alameda County PUBLIC HEALTH’s NUTRITION SERVICES PROGRAM is recruiting for a temporary REGISTERED DIETITIAN (Program Specialist)

We are looking for a passionate, innovative program manager to help transform care, to ensure the effective, efficient and cohesive delivery of services to Alameda County residents, and to keep the community informed.

THE POSITION

The Alameda County NUTRITION SERVICES PROGRAM is seeking a temporary dietitian to support nutrition education, physical activity and diabetes education community programs and activities.

Diabetes Program:

  • Conduct multiple series of eight (2-hour) in-person diabetes self-management education classes for priority populations, including predominantly low-income older adults in San Leandro, East Oakland, Alameda, Pleasanton, and other parts of the county following an established curriculum. Classes are accredited by the American Diabetes Association and intended to educate participants who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes on how to self-manage the condition while living a healthy life and avoiding long-term complications of diabetes.  
  • Conduct monthly in-person support groups in San Leandro, East Oakland, Alameda, Pleasanton, and other part of the county. Maintain attendance lists. Coordinate with peer educators in the support of class logistics. Measure participant Hemoglobin A1c, blood pressure, and weight at the first (class 1) and last (class 8) class of the education series (materials available). Refer participants as needed for further support with diabetes.

Nutrition Services Program:

  • Provide community-based nutrition education and physical activity technical assistance.
  • Develop, conduct, and administer the nutritional aspects of programming.
  • Conduct literature research for best-practices (evidence and practice based), assess community needs, and conduct impact/ outcome evaluation, data entry, and data analysis.
  • Prepare, review, and recommend material on nutrition, such as pamphlets, handouts, and cookbooks.
  • Use dietary guidelines and nutritional software program in performing menu and recipe analysis to ensure recipes served meet defined nutritional standards.
  • Coordinate work with nutrition assistants or peer educators to meet program needs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current certified Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)
  • Comfort and experience conducting small group discussions with diverse participants.
  • Experience working both independently and cooperatively as a team member.
  • Effective communication, presentation, facilitation, and classroom management skills.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office programs. Graphic design helpful.
  • Experience with diverse communities in Alameda County. Bilingual a plus.
  • Exemplify cultural competence and practice cultural humility and agility in service delivery and approach.
  • Understanding of health and racial equity in public and community health.
  • At least one year of diabetes education experience, preferred.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability and means to travel to/from classes/support groups/community learning sites.
  • Job-related travel will be reimbursed according to county policies.
  • For the Diabetes work, fieldwork will occur primarily in San Leandro, Oakland, Alameda, Pleasanton, and other locales as identified to support program expansion. General Nutrition Services work is county-wide.
  • Hybrid position: Alameda County Nutrition Services office (Oakland), home office and in the community.
  • A background check will be needed for the successful candidate, including fingerprinting and a criminal history clearance by the county and City of San Leandro and other entities, if needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s with major coursework in business or public administration, a social science or field related field; AND, EXPERIENCE:  Equivalent to three years of full-time professional-level or supervisory work in the direct delivery of services to clients or the oversight of such services in the program area to which assigned, one year of which must have included program planning and    evaluation, or in program administration, contract negotiations, grants management and similar financial services.  

SUBSTITUTION: Possession of a Master’s degree in business, public administration, social science or a related field to the program area to which assigned from an accredited college or university, may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  In addition to the MQs, this position requires applicants to possess licensure as a Registered Dietitian.
