Public Health Medical Officer III | California Department of Public Health

Dear Colleague,

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Immunization Branch plans to hire Public Health Medical Officers (PHMOs) to help implement new California laws on medical exemptions to immunization requirements for school and childcare entry.*

We aim to interview for the first of the PHMO positions in early December, with a start date in early 2020. Candidates must qualify for the PHMO III category on the state civil service list. Instructions for applying for the civil service exam are here: https://www.calcareers.ca.gov/CalHrPublic/Exams/Bulletin.aspx?examCD=8H1AE02. Instead of a test, the exam process requires you to submit a state application and college transcript, followed later by a Qualifications Assessment survey based on the PHMO3 specifications at https://www.calhr.ca.gov/state-hr-professionals/Pages/7705.aspx.  See also box below about navigating the civil service examination process. If you have questions about the civil service process or would like to be notified when the first duty statement is posted, please contact [email protected]

To be considered for the first of the PHMO positions, please complete your application for the PHMO III exam by 11/7/19.

While these positions will ideally be based at the main Immunization Branch office in Richmond (Contra Costa County, across the bay from San Francisco), candidates based in other locations may be considered.

If you have questions about the new PHMO III roles in our Branch, feel free to contact me (see my signature block below) or Dr. Rob Schechter ([email protected]).

Thank you for helping spread the word about these exciting opportunities!
