The Guna lab at the University of California, San Francisco (https://www.gunalab.org/) is looking for a postdoctoral scholar to lead projects focused on how membrane proteins get made in human cells. Approximately one quarter of the eukaryotic proteome consists of membrane proteins. This extremely diverse class, encompassing GPCRs, viral proteins, neurotransmitter receptors, and immune receptors, play essential roles in all aspects of cellular physiology. Understanding how these proteins are made is not only a fundamental problem in cell biology, but has far ranging implication across fields from neuroscience to pharmacology. The lab is specifically focused on two sites of membrane protein biogenesis: the endoplasmic reticulum, and the mitochondria. We use a combination of high-throughput genomic techniques, cell biology, and biochemistry to understand how the biophysically complex human membrane proteome is manufactured and regulated across cell types. Candidates should have a creative and rigorous approach to scientific research, and should be open to tackling new projects in a collaborative environment.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead an interdisciplinary research project integrating functional genomics and mechanistic biochemistry to understand how membrane proteins are made in mammalian cells
  • Design experiments, interpret data, write manuscripts, present research at scientific conferences, and gain mentorship experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with core methods of cell biology and biochemistry including: cloning, mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry, protein analysis, basic biochemistry, and protein purification
  • Candidates with experience in high-throughput CRISPR screening and experience with membrane protein manipulation are encouraged to apply
Job Requirements:
  • PhD or MD degree with a background in molecular and cellular biology
  • Significant contributions to peer reviewed publications
  • Commitment to curiosity-driven research in a collaborative environment
