The postdoctoral fellow will investigate barriers to surgical care in South Africa and conduct a nationwide survey on surgical capacity at district hospitals. The fellow will have the opportunity to learn about research and policy in global surgery that strive to improve the quality and access to surgical care, particularly in South Africa and the sub-Saharan region. The fellow will be expected to conduct research, produce scholarly outputs including published peer-reviewed papers, mentor undergraduate and master’s degree students, and contribute to the submission of further funding applications.

  • Duration: 2 years
  • Start date: negotiable
  • Stipend: R250,000 to R400,000 per annum depending on experience
  • Fellowships are awarded tax free. Please note that postdoctoral fellowships are not appointed as employees and not eligible for standard employee benefits.
Job Requirements: 

 

  • Applicants who obtained their PhD in a relevant field (epidemiology, public health, medicine, surgery, obstetrics, anesthesia) within 5 years of the commencement date
  • Research experience in global health and health systems is required, with experience in global surgery highly desirable
  • A track record of published research
  • Willingness to travel within South Africa and the Southern African region
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to function in a multicultural environment, manage projects, and work independently
