The Arnaout laboratory studies deep learning and other computational methods for biomedical imaging and related clinical data, with the goals of decreasing diagnostic error and developing and scaling novel phenotypes to drive precision medicine. UCSF is a top-10 medical center and a leader in cross-campus efforts to mine, harmonize, and analyze multi-modal clinical data for the University of California’s 15 million patients. The Arnaout laboratory is part of the Bakar Institute, Center for Intelligent Imaging, Biomedical Informatics graduate program, and the nationally ranked Department of Medicine. Projects focus on deep learning for medical imaging, using associated clinical metadata for labeling and/or validation.

Job Requirements: 

Required:

  • PhD degree in computer science, engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or related field.
  • Fluency in Python, including tools such as Tensorflow, Keras, or PyTorch; Pandas; Scikit; as well as tools for data visualization (e.g. d3.js, R, Matlab, pylab, seaborn, etc).
  • Familiarity with computing in the cloud/on HPC (AWS, GCP, or similar)
  • Familiarity with standard computer vision techniques
  • Working knowledge of biostatistics, databases, and data structures.
  • Team player with interpersonal skills in order to work with both technical and non- technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Self-motivated, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate strong organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of application and data security concepts.
  • Expertise in machine learning techniques such as convolutional neural networks, recursive neural networks, LSTMs, random forests
  • Interest in applying computational analysis to life sciences data
  • Demonstrate high integrity and professionalism to work with patient data in a HIPAA- compliant and morally and ethically responsible manner

Preferred:

  • Working knowledge of R and Matlab
  • Working knowledge of applications programming and web development.
  • Working project management skills.
  • Working knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.
  • Industry experience in data science, specifically with cutting-edge machine learning approaches to data analysis.(1 year minimum; 2-3 years preferred)
