A full-time postdoctoral scholar fellowship position is available for a highly motivated scientist interested in biostatistics, pharmacogenomics, cardiology, and precision medicine in the laboratory of Dr. Akinyemi Oni-Orisan at the University of California, San Francisco. The major scientific focus of the position will be to generate, manage, and analyze large datasets containing electronic health records, genomic data, drug regimens, and clinical outcomes. The laboratory currently has projects identify the genetic and social determinants of pharmacological drug response among racial/ethnic minorities, elucidating the clinical validity of CHD polygenic risk scores for statin ASCVD prevention by leveraging real-world data from the Kaiser Permanente Research Bank (KPRB) and validating key findings in the Million Veteran Program (MVP) cohort of the Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care system, and candidate variants/genes/pathways associated with new-onset diabetes susceptibility in statin users. The fellow will have opportunities to publish their work in professional journals and/or present data at professional meetings. The fellow will also be encouraged to take advantage of other training and learning opportunities within the Institute for Human Genetics, Department of Clinical Pharmacy, the School of Pharmacy, and other related entities at UCSF. The initial appointment is 1 year with the potential for renewal for up to 5 additional years depending on starting level of experience and by mutual agreement.  

Job Requirements: 

The fellow must be a graduate of an accredited doctoral program with a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Data Sciences, Health Informatics, Health Statistics, or a related field by the start of the fellowship. A strong background in clinical research and data analysis is required.

  • Thorough skills associated with statistical analysis and systems programming
  • Knowledge of large dataset management, data analysis, data visualization (preferably KPRB, All of Us, MVP)
  • Prior experience constructing complex, longitudinal data sets, conducting inferential statistics, and related coding
  • Proficiency in statistics, data analysis, research methods and statistical packages such as SPSS, SAS, and/or R, or a related package
  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills [must meet minimum English proficiency]

Preferred qualifications:

  • Expertise or interest in precision medicine, cardiology, pharmacogenomics
  • Experience in real-world data or EHR data analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in teams
  • A desire to become a leader in academia or other organizations

Salary

  • The fellow will receive a stipend consistent with NIH post-doctoral fellowship standards (based on experience), with a supplemental amount in accordance with UCSF policy. Additional start-up funds beyond salary may be available. All postdocs also receive a generous benefits package that encompasses health, dental, vision, and short-term disability insurance, including coverage for their dependents.  In addition, vacation, sick and professional leave are provided and there are possibilities for travel and conference funds. This position is federally funded: U.S. Citizenship, residency, or appropriate visa required.
