Researchers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) are seeking an individual to conduct innovative research to examine the causal effects of natural experiments (college geographic accessibility, college financial accessibility, working age income security, and retirement age income security) on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), including whether college accessibility and income security reduced socioeconomic, racial, and geographic disparities in ADRD. The project involves implementing approaches to leverage exogenous variation from natural experiments in multiple large U.S. survey data sets to understand lifecourse determinants of ADRD.

Postdoctoral candidates must possess a doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, MD, ScD or equivalent) in epidemiology or a related field, e.g. sociology, demography, economics, etc. Fellow must have strong quantitative skills, be detailed oriented, and willing to implement and / or learn novel approaches to understanding treatment effect heterogeneity using approaches such as interaction terms, quantile regression, and distributional decomposition. This position is for two to three years and suitable for graduating doctoral students who are looking to gain research experience and further career development. Research experience in social determinants of health, disparities, and dementia and aging outcomes is desirable. Methodological expertise in longitudinal analysis, econometric methods (e.g., instrumental variables analysis), and treatment effect heterogeneity are also highly desirable. Experience in Stata, R, or SAS is required. Fellows will be expected to conduct statistical analysis, publish first-authored manuscripts on projects aligned with the primary research topic, present findings at national conferences, and prepare grant applications to establish research independence. They will benefit from a strong mentorship team, led by principal investigator Dr. Anusha M. Vable, with mentorship also available from co-investigators Dr. Maria Glymour and Dr. Rita Hamad.

All application packets must include a cover letter describing interests and experience, CV, two or more professional references, one manuscript (published or unpublished), and one sample of statistical code. Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. The earliest start date is Fall 2020. Salaries are competitive and will be commensurate with the applicants’ experience and training. Additional funding is available for hardware and software, travel and research expenses.

Applicants may submit their applications in an email entitled “Postdoc application” to Dr. Vable at [email protected]. Questions about the position can also be directed to Dr. Vable.
