The Stad Center for Pediatric Pain, Palliative and Integrative Medicine at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in Oakland and San Francisco is one of the most comprehensive programs of its kind in the country LINK and LINK.
This exciting ambitious program provides interdisciplinary care to infants, children, teenagers, and young adults. Integrative Medicine provides and teaches safe evidence-based integrative therapies (such as massage, acupuncture/acupressure, biofeedback, aromatherapy, self-hypnosis) in collaboration with music therapy to provide care that promotes optimal health and supports the highest level of functioning in all individual child's activities LINK.
The interdisciplinary pain program is devoted to prevent and treat acute, procedural, neuropathic, total, visceral, and chronic pain for pediatric patients in close collaboration with all clinicians and subspecialties at the Benioff Children’s Hospitals LINK.
The palliative care team provides holistic care for pediatric patients with life-limiting diseases on both campuses and adds an extra layer of support to the care of children with serious illness and their families, providing palliative and hospice care in the hospital, outpatient clinic and at home.
The Benioff Children’s Hospital was a recent recipient of the prestigious ChildKind International designation and is credentialed by The Joint Commission for Pediatric Palliative Care. The Center provides comprehensive teaching, including the annual Pediatric Pain Master Class and EPEC-Pediatrics.
UCSF Institute for Health & Aging The Institute for Health & Aging (IHA) LINK is UCSF’s first campus-wide organized research unit (ORU) devoted to the study of health and aging. Based in the UCSF School of Nursing, IHA’s primary function is to bring together multi-disciplinary faculty to conduct innovative research in health and aging, including music and health research.
Pediatric Music Therapy Postdoctoral Fellowship The Research fellowship will provide postdoctoral training for a highly-qualified credentialed music therapist with a Ph.D. The 3-year fellowship has two key goals:
- Provide intensive research training in the topic area of pediatrics, pain, and music therapy; and
- Provide interprofessional mentorship for a music therapy researcher to become an independent academic researcher.
The fellowship will offer a unique experience for learning, growing, and advancing research. The fellow will learn the methods required to implement clinical research and begin training at the UCSF Summer Clinical Research Workshop. The fellowship also will leverage clinical research courses from UCSF’s Advanced Training in Clinical Research. Furthermore, the fellow will participate in the two of the most comprehensive training courses in the field worldwide and directed by Dr. Friedrichsdorf: the Pediatric Pain Master Class and Education in Palliative & End-of-Life Care Pediatrics. These trainings will allow the fellow to further their knowledge, skills, and attitude in the field.
The multidisciplinary nature of the mentorship experience will be unique. The mentoring team will include Julene Johnson, PhD (Professor, Institute for Health & Aging, UCSF School of Nursing and the Sound Health Network LINK), Sheri Robb, PhD, MT-BC (Walther Professor of Supportive Oncology, Indiana University Schools of Nursing and Medicine LINK), and Stefan Friedrichsdorf, MD (Elisa and Marc Stad Professor in Pediatric Pain Medicine, Palliative Care and Integrative Medicine LINK), with additional mentors as needed. The fellow will meet with their interprofessional mentoring team on a monthly basis to discuss their research project and career development in addition to obtaining tailored training on music therapy, pediatrics, pain, palliative care, and music and health research.
The Research fellowship will provide postdoctoral training for a highly-qualified credentialed music therapist with a Ph.D.
Based at the Stad Center , the Fellowship aims to prepare the next generation to accomplish high-impact pediatric music therapy researchers. The postdoctoral scholar will spend three years (in person) at the UCSF Stad Center for Pediatric Pain, Palliative, and Integrative Medicine in intensive clinical research training that includes structured mentorship, independent research projects, and training in clinical / music research, pain, palliative care, and pediatrics. We anticipate appointing one new postdoctoral fellow to start in the fall of 2023 for two years; a third year may be an option, pending availability of funding.
The fellow will be expected to author or co-author at least two manuscripts, learn about grant writing and submit at least one research grant and be prepared to apply for positions in academic or health system settings to accomplish high-impact music therapy research after completing their fellowship training. The fellow also will be expected to present at conferences and other professional network events to share findings and foster dialog.
