The Winn Lab at the University of California San Francisco / San Francisco VA has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher. The Winn Lab partners with the Lynch Lab and the Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine to study the ocular surface microbiome and its interaction with host epithelial and immune cells. We are seeking highly talented and motivated candidates with a strong research background in microbiome or immunology, ideally experienced with cell culture and mouse models. The postdoctoral fellow will lead studies aimed at categorizing the composition and function of the ocular surface and conjunctival tissue-associated microbiome in normal and diseased states.

Candidates will be expected to work independently and be active contributors to the collaborative multidisciplinary team of microbiologists, immunologists, biostatisticians, and clinicians of the Winn and Lynch labs. Candidate will report directly to Dr. Bryan Winn and Dr. Susan Lynch but will work closely with collaborators within and outside of the group

Responsibilities:

  • Work in collaboration with the Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine (BCMM) culture facility to isolate strains of interest, including use of single-microbial sorting technology
  • Perform 16S rRNA and whole genome sequencing on strains of interest
  • Perform functional assays of strains of interest
  • Perform human and microbial RNA-seq on tissue and swab samples
  • Perform in vivo assays using conventional and gnotobiotic mice
  • Perform in vitro studies of human immune and epithelial cells to validate mechanism(s) of action
Job Requirements:

Recent Ph.D. (within the last 3 years) in microbiology, immunology, or a related discipline

  • Background in microbial molecular methods, including whole genome sequencing and annotation
  • Experience with murine models, cell culture, immune profiling, in vitro immune/microbiota profiling and RNAseq analyses
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative research team and effectively interact with a broad range of colleagues from distinct disciplines
  • Ability to work independently and productively and to troubleshoot
  • Superb organizational and record-keeping skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Good lab citizen
