Public Health Laboratory

The Alameda County Public Health Laboratory provides laboratory support, technical assistance, and research required for the diagnosis, investigation, and control of a wide range of infectious diseases for the development and maintenance of high-quality laboratory services for Alameda County. The Public Health Lab is under the Division of Communicable Diseases Control and Prevention. The team consists of the laboratory director, laboratory supervisor, senior microbiologists, microbiologists, lab technicians, and office staff. The public health lab is located in Oakland, CA.

The POSITION

The laboratory technician, under the supervision of the Alameda County Public Health Laboratory Supervisor, will receive training to utilize cutting edge technologies to perform clinical diagnostic testing and improve laboratory testing capabilities.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist accessioning, processing, and storing of laboratory specimens for testing and shipping.
  • Check-in and process samples for testing using pipetting devices and finely graduated glassware.
  • Dissecting/preparing tissue samples and slides for rabies testing.
  • Performing microbial analysis on water samples.
  • TB/Mycology specimen processing, slide prep, and media inoculation.
  • Maintain QA and QC records for the laboratory, when necessary.
  • Organize and maintain archive repositories for different sample types.
  • Operate autoclaves, dishwashers and/or drying ovens to clean instruments and used glassware in order to prepare them for re-use in the lab procedures.
  • Clean, package, and sterilize glassware and other equipment for use in the lab.
  • Autoclave and disinfect laboratory materials containing potentially infectious agents; dispose those materials following autoclaving/decontamination procedures
  • Prepare reagents and media for use in diagnostic testing.
  • Perform data entry for patient information, routing samples for testing, and tracking.
  • Use of Microsoft Word suite programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel, when needed
  • Other duties as necessary in the laboratory or office when deemed necessary.

Preferred Qualities:

  • Attention to detail and application of laboratory safety practices.
  • Ability to learn and apply concepts to the job at hand.

Familiarity with:

  • Laboratories, sterile technique, and microbiological concepts
  • Standard precautions for working with potential infectious clinical specimens

Job Requirements: 

LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Satisfactory completion of four college-level courses, including two courses in chemistry and two courses in biology or an equivalent natural science from an accredited college or university; AND,

EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of one-year full-time experience as a laboratory assistant in a physical/biotechnology, medical or public health setting. SUBSTITUTION: An AA degree in a Natural Science from an accredited college may substitute for six months of the experience.
