Staff Research Associate I / Staff Research Associate II

The EPPIcenter at UCSF (https://eppicenter.ucsf.edu/) aims to advance the understanding of infectious diseases to reduce global morbidity and mortality. The two projects that the successful applicant will work on are focused on developing novel molecular metrics to improve malaria surveillance from host serologic data and multiplex amplicon next-generation sequencing of malaria parasites, using samples routinely collected from cross-sectional surveys and health facilities. Under supervision, the SRA will be responsible for performing and organizing laboratory work with collaborators and technicians in Uganda, organizing samples and data in the laboratory, and coordinating work with local and international collaborators. There will be opportunities for gaining experience in setting up a field study, including visiting study sites, and travel to conferences and other workshops. The ideal applicant would have a combination of international experience, project management skills, and laboratory experience. They will need to be detail oriented and good at anticipating problems and finding solutions. Clear, consistent communication is a must. Cultivating and maintaining good relationships with colleagues in Uganda will be essential.

Job Requirements: 

Required Qualifications

SRA 1:

  • BA/BS degree in biology or related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Basic laboratory techniques and procedures as learned from academic laboratory or professional experience
  • Comfort with computer software such as Excel and Access and running scripts such as Python
  • Demonstrated reliability, organizational skills, attention to detail, and record keeping abilities based on prior experience
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to function well on a team

SRA 2:

  • In addition to the above, one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position and demonstrating technical expertise in these areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • International experience
  • Experience with project management
  • Experience as a laboratory technician
  • Experience with performing next-generation sequencing, including whole genome and / or targeted amplicon sequencing
  • Knowledge of database software, statistical software (e.g. SQL, STATA, R)
  • Computer programming (e.g. Python)
  • Experience with analyzing next-generation sequencing or serology data

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • MPH or equivalent Master’s-level degree
  • Experience as a laboratory technician
  • Experience with PCR, PCR optimization
  • Experience with performing next-generation sequencing, including whole genome and / or targeted Amplicon sequencing
  • Experience with culturing bacteriophage
  • Advanced knowledge of Database software, statistical software (e.g. STATA, R)
  • Computer programming (e.g. Python, C++, D3)
  • Experience with analyzing next-generation sequencing or microarray data
