Executive Director, Health Assurance Economy Foundation

The Health Assurance Economy Foundation (“HAEF”) is seeking an Executive Director to establish the foundation’s operations and key philanthropic activities as the first hire.

About the Organization

The Health Assurance Economy Foundation is an independent non-profit corporation whose mission is to transform healthcare in the U.S. and the world through investments in stories and causes that matter. HAEF is based on the thesis of Health Assurance: creating a data-driven, cloud-based category of healthcare to create a more proactive, affordable, & equitable system of care while reducing the GDP of Healthcare in the United States (as outlined in the book Unhealthcare). HAEF is a critical part of the Health Assurance ecosystem, working in close partnership with a large venture capital firm, health technology startups and corporations, and other partner entities. HAEF is backed by an asset pool in excess of $10MM liquid and $100MM in private securities in fast-growing start-ups, with expected additional upside. The organization’s main initial focus will be to establish operations and source opportunities for grant-making across the healthcare landscape in accordance with the Health Assurance mission.

About the Role

The Executive Director will be the first full-time hire for HAEF. The Executive Director will play a pivotal role in shaping the Foundation’s financial, legal, and organizational structure and ongoing initial activities in support of Health Assurance. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of HAEF, including implementing the mission, vision, and goals.

Key responsibilities of the Executive Director include:

  • Co-create a vision of what a Health Assurance future looks like, and the Foundation’s role in creating it

  • Build partnerships and collaborations with ecosystem partners that share the Foundation’s vision
  • Understand the healthcare industry landscape, including identifying potential partners and investment opportunities, from providers to other non-profits, community groups, initiatives, policy groups, and more
  • Evaluate grant-giving opportunities and provide consulting advice on scaling healthcare-related efforts to grantees
  • Understand and steward the Foundation’s balance sheet and investments into high-return activities at a sustainable rate, ensuring the ongoing financial health of the organization, including budgeting activities
  • Communicate HAEF’s vision, mission, and goals to a wide audience through various channels, including social media, public speaking, and written materials
  • Develop an initial public policy strategy aimed at the national level related to Health Assurance and the Foundation’s vision and goals, and understand ecosystem partners and potential avenues for advocacy
  • Board governance
    • Collaborate with the current Board to build out and mature the Board as needed
    • Act as primary liaison to the Board of Directors, engaging Board members in the current and future needs of the organization
    • Communicate effectively with the Board and provide, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions

The ideal candidate for this role will have a passion for transforming the healthcare industry in alignment with the Health Assurance thesis, as well as financial abilities to lead the organization’s internal structure with oversight from the Board. The candidate will have strong independent leadership abilities to create the organization’s activities from scratch, evaluating the organization’s activities along an investment-to-societal return framework. A strong understanding of the healthcare industry, its challenges, opportunities, and partnership opportunities is necessary.
