Muso’s mission is to eliminate preventable deaths rooted in poverty. We build health systems to save lives by reaching patients faster, within hours of the moment they become sick. Muso has spent more than a decade iterating on our innovative Proactive Care model, preparing it for scale. We have documented rapid health improvements across the populations we serve: a 2018 study found that communities we reach in Mali, which previously saw some of the world’s highest child mortality rates, sustained the lowest child mortality rate in sub-Saharan Africa for five years and ultimately reached a rate on par with that of the United States.

We provide proactive health care to 350,000 patients across nine sites in peri-urban and rural Mali, and embed rigorous academic research and strategic advocacy to identify and share strategies that can accelerate global efforts for child survival, maternal health, and universal health coverage. Given the transformations in health care access and survival Muso has documented, over the next five years our direct service, research, and advocacy will work to advance a new model of care for community health systems. About the Position

More than five million children die every year and more than half the world’s population lives without access to essential health care. To take on these enormous injustices, Muso is growing exponentially. Over the next five years, we plan to grow our budget from $6 million per year to up to $18 million per year in order to support us to reach up to one million patients and improve care for tens of millions of people through changes in global policy and practice. To get there, we will pursue significant growth in our foundation, corporate, individual, and government/bi- and multi-lateral revenue streams, and build systems to support our current partnerships with nearly 40 organizations and a committed group of individual donors.

In this context, Muso’s Development Associate will provide critical support to our development team and fundraising initiatives, primarily supporting two cross-cutting areas necessary to maintain and grow our partnerships: proposal development and reporting, and prospect research. First, s/he will be responsible for managing and supporting materials for a range of current and prospective funding partners, providing this writing, editing, and project management capacity across Muso’s portfolio and with the teammates leading these partnerships. Second, s/he will be responsible for researching and helping prioritize new foundation, corporate, government, and individual funding prospects. Finally, this role will provide administrative and development operations support to the development and communications team as needed, identifying and supporting improved processes and systems.

Based in San Francisco, CA, this position will report to the Foundation Partnerships Manager and work in close collaboration with other development team members and executive leadership. This role will join a rapidly-growing development and communications team working between San Francisco and Bamako, Mali. Muso’s nine-person, San Francisco-based satellite office supports operations in Mali, where our in-country team members number over 500.

Responsibilities

Grants Management, Proposal Development, and Reporting (40% FTE)

• Develop, write, edit, and prepare proposals, reports, and other materials for a range of institutional, foundation, and individual funding opportunities or current partnerships needs.
• Collaborate with development and finance team members on the development of grant budgets and financial grant reports.
• As needed, work with the development team and Graphic Designer to support the development of online and print communications collateral for donors and other external partners.
• Develop other materials and assist with other grant projects as needed.

Prospect Research (40% FTE)

• Manage team-wide standardized prospecting processes.
• Research potential grantmakers and present opportunity summaries to wider development team; help prioritize and evaluate new foundation, corporate, government, and individual funding prospects.

Development Operations (20% FTE)

• As needed, provide administrative and development operations support to the development and communications team related to funder requests, team systems, or general development processes.
• Identify opportunities for team process improvement, coordinating with the Foundation Partnerships Manager and the Development Operations & Communications Associate to creatively solve problems and implement solutions. In particular, identify and support improved development and development/finance systems for managing complex institutional grants.
• As applicable to the proposal, reporting, and research processes this role supports, track grant deadlines to support timely submission of materials to funders, and support development team to monitor organizational adherence to and progress against requirements related to each partnership (including financial, programmatic, operational, and reporting requirements against deliverables).

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation will be $50,000-$55,000 per year, commensurate with experience. A health insurance package will be included. This position will receive up to 20 days of vacation annually and one sick day per month based on date of hire, as well as major U.S. holidays.
