Job Summary
The Buck Institute is looking for a Data Manager who would be responsible for all scientific data collection and data pipelines as well as sample organization and management for an exciting new project. The Rejuvenome Project will coordinate with the aging science community to produce an open and comprehensive dataset describing how key biomarkers are impacted by multiple interventions across the lifespan of mice. The results will help provide a foundation for future aging research. Rejuvenome will ultimately study the effects of a number of intervention combinations with the potential to disrupt multiple aging processes at once. This position is onsite.
Organizational Status and Location
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Data Manager works closely with scientific staff in the Melov Lab, researchers, bioinformatics programmers and scientific staff at collaborating research universities and institutes. This position is primarily on premise with occasional days remote. Applicants must be local or willing to relocate.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Responsible for the acquisition, organization, and storage of analytical data from a variety of research instruments.
- Build and maintain a data pipeline to move data from analytical instruments to primary storage; process data through pre-processing and analytical processing pipelines; and automate the annotation of experimental data.
- Build and maintain a system to track experimental data back to original samples and organisms.
- Serve as the first point of contact for scientific research staff and other bioinformatics scientists to the scientific data and associated databases.
- Setup and maintain research systems and databases, including a mouse tracking database and an RFID tracking system.
Required Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- 1-2 years of experience as a data manager or bioinformatics programmer
- Proficiency in a computer programming language
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent oral and written communications skills
- Strong multitasking skills
- Experience using computers to collect, move, and manipulate large data files
- Fluency with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and databases
- Bachelor’s degree
Desired Skills and Experience
- Experience with relational databases.
- Previous experience managing or training junior employees
- Previous experience in a research laboratory
